To become the responsible energy major, we need not only to achieve our business objectives but also to spearhead citizenship initiatives in our host communities. Through Total Foundation's global program, the Group aims to contribute to development in our host communities and regions, alongside our partners.
Made of portraits and reports, Pathway(s) tells the stories of these actions that we lead in Africa through 4 axes representing the commitments of the Group and Total Foundation:
Through Pathway(s), we have decided to give voice to local communities and associations, who initiate ideas and innovative initiatives and work with us everyday on the field for the implementation of our ambitious societal policy in Africa.
YOUTH JOB INSECURITY,
AN ALARMING REALITY
In a complex global economic environment, youth unemployment and job insecurity have worrying human and financial consequences across the world. In Africa, young people – who make up more than 60% of the population – face challenges such as poverty, unemployment, lack of educational infrastructure and sometimes even illiteracy.
in youth talent
Total is committed to helping young people thrive, driven by the belief that sustainable development cannot be achieved without effective solutions to promote their professional and social inclusion. Despite being both the future of their regions and the key to local vitality, too few young people have been given the opportunity to demonstrate their talents. Our objective is to empower them to take control of their future and to play a key role in the development of their communities.
CREATING VALUE IN HOST REGIONS
Given this situation, Total believes that it has a responsibility to take action and contribute to making a positive social impact in all of its host regions across the world. With operations in 43 countries, we create jobs and value on the continent. Beyond our economic contribution, we are determined to provide young people who have been left behind by the system with opportunities to reach their full potential. In this way, we are committed to helping socially vulnerable young people become independent.
Road accidents are every year the leading cause of death among children in Africa. As more people gain access to this form of mobility, road safety is proving vital. Accordingly, the United Nations has set the ambitious objective of halving the number of deaths and injuries from road traffic accidents by 2020.
A VALUE THAT DRIVES US
At Total, safety is a core value that is embedded in all of our processes, because it ensures our long-term sustainability as a business. Total is a company with close ties to cars and drivers. Our trucks cover more than 700 million kilometers every year and we supply fuel to some 4 million road users every day. For this reason, Total has drawn up stringent rules and procedures for all of its drivers.
EXPERTISE TO SHARE
WITH THE CREDIBILITY TO ACT
Our goal is to share our expertise with professionals and other individuals in local communities to achieve a reduction in the number of victims. Present in 43 countries of Africa, including in areas with a high rate of road traffic accidents, we operate at the heart of our host regions through service stations, depots, affiliates and more, where we can be attentive to the accident prevention needs of local stakeholders. Partnerships with local road safety players, such as NGOs, local authorities and schools, enable us to develop trust-based relationships thanks to which we can efficiently move community behaviors in the right direction. We also develop initiatives alongside other partners operating in the private sector. By pooling our strengths and resources, these alliances help to maximize our impact.
A DRIVER FOR SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
In all of our host regions, the heritage of past generations is a precious asset that unites communities, affirms their identity and structures their future. A source of openness and empowerment, culture enables people to expand their horizons and develop skills that are essential to social cohesion. And by creating job opportunities and driving tourism and economic development, culture also contributes to the vitality and appeal of our host regions.
A KEY ASPECT OF OUR OPERATIONS
Total owes its success to the thousands of men and women who work with each other and with our local host communities worldwide. Cultural dialogue is therefore a core component of our day-to-day business practices. Respect for other people’s cultures, religions, backgrounds and beliefs is critical to the creation of a united corporate community.
A FOCUS ON INCLUDING
AND BENEFITING YOUNG PEOPLE
Total Foundation has made a conscious decision to systematically include young people in the cultural programs it supports. This might be by encouraging the emergence of artistic initiatives that give them opportunities for self-expression and growth, training them in cultural heritage restoration to enhance their employability, or initiating them into the art of playing music in an orchestra. Each of the programs supported by the Foundation therefore plays a part in empowering young people to fulfill their potential, enhancing social cohesion among communities, and fostering commitment and self-confidence.
COMBATTING GLOBAL WARMING
OPERATIONS ON ALL FRONTS
In 2015, the COP 21 climate conference brought about a strong wave of public awareness, made official by commitments from a number of stakeholders with one major objective: limit global warming to less than 2°C by 2100. Achieving such an ambitious task means leveraging all available resources.
By 2035, our ambition is to have close to 20% of our portfolio made up of low-carbon businesses, while maintaining profitable growth in these areas.
Total Foundation, for its part, is a committed supporter of projects that preserve coastal areas and oceans.
PRESERVING COASTAL AREAS AND OCEANS,
THE LUNGS OF THE PLANET
Oceans play a key role in regulating the climate. Through physical and biological processes, they produce 50% of the oxygen that we breathe, absorb 25% of our CO2 and capture more than 90% of additional heat1. Moreover, coastal areas and oceans are essential to human life, be it for food, transportation, the economy or leisure. Nearly 2.4 billion people (around 40% of the world’s population) live within 100 kilometers of the coast2.
However, rising temperatures due to global anthropogenic emissions are causing oceans to expand, resulting in higher sea levels and the displacement of adaptable species. Greater amounts of dissolved CO2 are increasing oceans acidity, which has untold harmful consequences for biodiversity. Climate change is also fueling extreme weather events in the oceans. And yet, coral reefs, mangroves, wetlands and other ecosystems play a key role in mitigating the effects of climate change and protect coasts from storms and submersion risks.
Mindful of these challenges, we support citizen-led initiatives in France and worldwide to protect marine and coastal ecosystems, linking them to applied-research, awareness and education campaigns exploring the interactions between the climate, coastal areas and oceans. We also support community initiatives aimed at building young people’s knowledge of coastal areas.
COASTAL AREAS AND OCEANS
A VAST HOST REGION FOR THE GROUP
Total Foundation strives to take action that benefits the Group’s host regions and the communities that live and work there. Helping to preserve coastal areas and oceans is part of this approach. Many of the Group’s operations are based in coastal areas and oceans, from exploration and production to offshore wind, maritime transportation and refining.
Furthermore, Total Foundation supported several research programs dedicated to marine biodiversity from 1992 to 2017, reflecting our long-standing commitment and making Total a trusted partner in these areas.
